Jack and Jill Storyboard and Character Designs
Concept
Before we are able to start working on our final Flash presentation, we are required to sketch out some concepts and designs for our sets and characters. We need to get a good idea of what we are animating, and making design sheets are useful for both reference and solidifying ambiguous ideas. Drawing moving characters is difficult if you don't have a clear idea of their body structure. Drawing out our characters will help us get a solid base form for their bodies, which will make animating their movement much easier. Also, good set designs are important to help us keep track of size relations between interacting characters and objects.

Character Concepts
JACK
These are the concept sketches for the character Jack in my "Jack and
Jill" final Flash presentation. He is supposed to look like a young teenager
in a wrestler's outfit. I was trying to get a design that would somehow
include the "crown" mentioned in the nursery rhyme, putting a literal
spin on the wordplay. These are several action scenes, expression
concepts, design ideas, and motion development.
The final design of Jack includes the small caplet, crown, shoulder fluff,
chest gem, half mask, and middle-short gloves and boots (halfway up
forearms and shins).
JILL
These are the concept sketches for the character Jill in my "Jack and Jill"
and final Flash presentation. She is supposed to look like a young teenager
in a wrestler's outfit. I wanted to somehow include a defining element to
her head to mimic Jack's crown. She was also supposed to emulate the
concept of tumbling, in the way that she "goes tumbling after" Jack in the
nursery rhyme. Her outfit is skintight and meant to resemble that of a
gymnast.
The final design of Jill includes the "J" on her chest, the long ponytail, half
mask, and middle-short gloves and boots (halfway up forearms and shins).
Set Concepts
SETS
These are the concept sketches for three different possible sets that could
need to be drawn for the final animation.
The first, in the upper left-hand corner, depicts Jack running along the
side of a mountain made of blankets and pillows.
The second, in the upper right-hand corner, shows Jill wiping her mouth
from a frontal view of the corner of the wrestling ring.
The third, in the lower center, displays Jack and Jill pushing each other in
a wrestling fashion above the pail, the prize at the top of the hill.

The fourth, in the upper left-hand corner, is a sketch of the full wrestling
ring, complete with the blanket mound in the center, pail atop the hill,
and large, square spotlights shining down on the match.
The fifth, in the lower left-hand corner, depicts what the enormous hill
and wrestling ring looks like in real life without the filter of Jack and Jill's
imaginations. There is a much smaller pile of blankets, a cup of water as
opposed to a pail, and two small children climbing instead of two teenage
warriors wrestling.
The sixth, on the right-hand side, shows the mother (named Gill in the
rhyme) stepping into the doorway of her children's room, interrupting
their game to pull them away for their family dinner.
